Engineered Fire & Safety Solutions have undertaken a number of prestige heritage projects and have developed an understanding of key functions and elements in refurbishment of our nationally significant building stock.

The key to providing functional and sympathetic effective fire safety solutions for heritage buildings requires several essential qualities in fire safety refurbishment, these are:

· Understanding is provided by our operatives having a thorough working knowledge and design capability in fire safety and fire protection systems.

· Sympathy is provided by the choice of systems and the level of their interactivity in service.

· Creativity is provided by our engineer’s knowledge of systems, using systems in a non-traditional way will provide the required result and levels of safety.

· Lateral Thinking an ability to evolve viable alternative solutions when seemingly insurmountable barriers arise is necessary to overcome the intricacies of heritage refurbishment.

· Love and Understanding of heritage is the last but most important attribute of a successful heritage refurbishment. Unless the engineers are “in synch” with the period, architecture, construction types and historic background of the building, they cannot fully understand the dual needs of retention in original form and modern levels of life safety which are required in the reuse of a heritage building.

The selection of the mix of fire safety systems depends on a number of factors, life safety and property protection being amongst the primary considerations.

Unlike new buildings which meet the prescriptive requirements of the building code of Australia, heritage restoration and refurbishment requires the consideration of the levels of property protection to be provided in addition to levels of life safety for occupants.

Combinations of active fire systems, passive fire systems, selection of materials, combinations and interaction of the installed systems are the key to our innovative solutions for heritage buildings.

Our staff is supported by the latest fire engineering software (zone and field modelling) and computer facilities to allow fully deterministic assessments to be made and appropriate solutions to be evolved.
