Our involvement with the railway system has been continued now for approximately 12 years.  It has involved many different aspects of the system and its fire safety.

A short resume of our ongoing association with the NSW Rail System follows:

· Project manager for the development of the NSW state rail standard guidelines for fire and life safety in underground railway facilities.

· Undertook upgrading of the above guidelines to performance based requirements.

· Developed a Fire Safety Evaluation system (FSES) for underground railway stations to allow an easily understandable method of assessing fire safety levels.

· Undertook full FSES assessments of all Sydney underground stations and determined fire safety levels.

· Undertook a fire safety study of the Glebe railway tunnel prior to its re-use for a light rail corridor.

· Developed and supervised hot smoke testing of the Glebe railway tunnel to assess fire-engineering outcomes.

· Developed and supervised hot smoke testing (1999) and retesting (2004) of the Town Hall railway station and prepared reports on the results.

· Provide fire engineering design advice to architects for the design of smoke exclusion facilities (smoke screens) for platform stairs and exit routes at Town Hall, Redfern ESR, Central ESR, Wynyard, Martin Place, Edgecliff and Bondi Junction stations.

· Participated as an independent expert on the value engineering of upgrading for Wynyard and Town Hall stations.

· Undertook full operational testing of the fire safety systems at all 12 Sydney underground railway stations and issued certificates for the systems on satisfactory operation.

· Undertook preliminary CFD study on Town Hall station to check the effectiveness of smoke exclusion screen design.

· Undertook zone & CFD modelling on the Chatswood rail enclosing structure to ascertain suitability of structural design to vent smoke, prepare a report on outcomes.

· Undertook fire engineering assessment of the Mortuary Heritage Station, prepared a works specification and oversighted upgrading works.

· Undertook a fire engineering analysis of a Heritage three storey signal box to provide remote fire and security monitoring.

· Presently undertaking an alternative solution for fire safety at the Rail Transport Museum—Thirlmere, NSW.

In addition to the above, our Principal Fire Safety Engineer is presently undertaking a Commonwealth funded doctoral research project that will investigate the transport of smoke and heat in underground railway tunnels.  Fires from 2MW to 20MW will be assessed in the research.  Whilst the research will not be completed for some time, the research is expected to be completed by mid 2006, with the results available after that time.

Engineered Fire & Safety Solutions have undertaken a substantial number of projects using fire modelling for the design of smoke containment and venting systems.  Both natural venting and mechanical venting systems have been evolved for large and atria areas.  All of the smoke venting systems designed by Engineered Fire & Safety Solutions have been tested by hot smoke testing on completing and we are pleased to advise that all have performed in the manner and acceptance criteria that we designed.
